Birding Tours in the Strait of Gibraltar

View of the Strait of Gibraltar from the beach of Tarifa

One of the great views that the Strait of Gibraltar has to offer: the beautiful beach of Tarifa with the Moroccan coast on the other side

Yeray Seminario leads birding tours in the Strait of Gibraltar, one of the best destinations to watch birds in Europe. The variety of habitats, amount of protected areas, and the fact that it is in the center of one of the most important bird migration routes in the world, makes the Strait of Gibraltar a “must” visit for every birder. It is one of the most beautiful regions of Spain as well, with some of the country’s best coastal scenery set against the mountains of Cadiz, an extensive Mediterranean forest with huge cork trees, a fascinating history and a rich gastronomy.

To talk about birding in the Strait of Gibraltar and Tarifa is to talk about raptor migration. On any given day during migration, it’s possible to see many raptors in great numbers, including the Black Kite, Short-toed Eagle, Booted Eagle, Honey Buzzard, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Egyptian Vulture, and Montagu’s Harrier, for instance. There is also a high diversity of resident birds: Spanish Imperial Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Little Bustard, Little Swift, White-rumped Swift, Rufous-tailed Scrub-Robin, Western Bonelli’s Warbler and the critically endangered Bald Ibis, among many others.

Yeray tailors every trip to meet the needs of the people that join him, so whether you are a hard core birder that wants to add some key species to your life list, or if you want to enjoy the diversity and richness of the landscape and wildlife of the region, he will work hard to make the most out of the day. Yeray also spends a lot of time photographing wildlife and landscapes. If you are a photographer yourself, there will be opportunities to take lots of pictures and learn new techniques to improve your images.
